Frequently Asked Questions

In Colorado any elected official can be recalled for legitimate grievances.  For the Recall Sheriff Tony Spurlock effort, we will have 60 days from the date the petition is certified to collect the needed 35,000 valid signatures.  Once the signatures are collected, they will be verified by the County Clerk, and if successful, a special election will be triggered.  This election would ask the voters if they would like to see “Sheriff Tony Spurlock recalled from office?” while also allowing voters to simultaneously vote for his replacement.  PLEASE NOTE: The petition does not effectively recall the elected official; and signing it simply states you agree the question should go to the voters to decide. 

We will need to collect 35,000 valid signatures.

A valid signature for the Recall Sheriff Tony Spurlock effort is from a Colorado voter who is registered to vote in Douglas County.  When signing, their name, address, and signature must match that of their voter registration.  It is important that nicknames aren’t used, and that if the voter has moved recently, they use the address where they are registered to vote on the date they are signing.  If they have recently moved to Douglas county, they will need to update their voter registration with their new address before signing the petition.

Anyone age 18 or over with a valid ID can volunteer to collect signatures.  They DO NOT need to be a Douglas County resident, or even registered to vote.  

While petitioning, it is important that the signature collector witnesses each signature and never leaves their petition unattended in public.  When the petition is full or the collector is done, the documents will need to be notarized.  

The Recall Sheriff Tony Spurlock team is working diligently to ensure all the pieces for a successful recall are put into place before pulling petitions and triggering the 60 day countdown of signature collection.  This includes research, data collection, volunteers, fundraising, etc.  As soon as this is complete, the recall will launch.  We anticipate a late summer start date.

You can help by pre-registering to sign a petition if you are a Douglas County resident.  When you pre-register, someone will contact you to sign the physical petition as soon as it is available.  PRE-REGISTER HERE.
